Superannuation Refunds You may get a refund of about 5% of whatever you earned in Australia (after tax) Backpackers and Travellers who have worked in Australia will have been paid superannuation. Superannuation is a compulsory contribution that employers (the people you worked for) MUST pay on your behalf. It is paid into a special Superannuation Fund, as a compulsory savings plan until you are aged about 65. Travellers who are not residents of Australia, or are temporary residents, can usually get their superannuation refunded to them when they leave Australia, less government taxes.
